I think what you&#039;re describing is absolutely correct, where I work people tend to call colleagues on the phone, or IM them, when in fact they are only a couple of cubicles away.  Sometimes being in between them you can hear the banter and I usually wonder why they aren&#039;t getting up and talking to each other face to face.

But on the other hand, I use IM to give someone a head&#039;s up such as&quot;Hey do you have time to talk, I&#039;m coming over...etc.&quot;.  

Also, I think if companies realized the value they&#039;d bring their customers, by keeping a familiar face around, there would be more done to keep employees.  It&#039;s rare today finding someone who&#039;s been with a company more than 5 , 10 years.
